Bankhead Tunnel reopening delayed by ‘unforeseen mechanical issues’

The Bankhead Tunnel will not reopen Friday night, it appears.

After announcing Friday morning the tunnel would be back open to traffic by 8 p.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced about 3 p.m. that the tunnel reopening would be delayed indefinitely.

“Due to some unforeseen mechanical issues found during operational testing, the opening of Bankhead Tunnel will be delayed,” ALDOT said in a release. “Crews will work continuously until repairs and testing are completed and the tunnel will reopen at that time.”

No time frame for the reopening was given.

The tunnel closed Monday morning to allow for upgrades to the tunnel’s electrical and lighting systems, as well as installation of a new emergency generator.

Throughout the closure, motorists have been directed to take alternate routes, including the Wallace Tunnel or the Africatown Bridge.
